About the record
A Beginning is exactly what its name says — the first full-length under the Joseph Thomas name, collecting six electronic and progressive house tracks written, produced and mixed by one person. The cover is a photograph of the water at sunset, and the opening track is named for it: “Transforming (original sunset mix).”
It is a record with a shape. Side A opens patient and keeps rising — “Transforming” into “Siren” into the seven-minute “Smooth Glide,” which is where the album stops being background. Side B is the longer, looser half: “Wedding Rave” runs eight and a half minutes and earns every one of them, and “Sails” lands the whole thing back on the water it started on.
These are the original mixes, mastered for the format rather than for a streaming loudness target — the same signal chain described on the studio page, run on the record it was built for. If you have only heard these tracks compressed through a phone, the vinyl is a different listen.
